Mr Luis Amaya is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at St Thomas’ Hospital. He is in charge of all the paediatric ophthalmic patients who are admitted to the Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
He trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital where he completed two fellowships, one in 1988 and another in 2000. He practice in Colombia for 10 years at the University Hospital where he was head of the department of ophthalmology. He was appointed associate professor of two universities in Colombia.
He has been a consultant in the UK since 2001 and has been a consultant at St Thomas’ Hospital since. He is the lead clinical for the paediatric ophthalmology department at St Thomas’ hospital and is involved in the training of doctors who want to become paediatric ophthalmologists and is the college tutor for trainees at St Thomas’ hospital.
He has also published important papers and contributed to outstanding medical books, including chapters for David Taylor’s ‘Paediatric Ophthalmology’.
Additionally, he is involved with the International Council of Ophthalmology, a non profit worldwide organisation that aims to improve the standards of eye care and training throughout the world.
Mr Luis Amaya has special interest in children’s ophthalmology in general, retinopathy of prematurity, strabismus in children and adjustable sutures in adult strabismus, children’s cataracts, children’s ocular trauma.
His main speciality is children’s ophthalmology and strabismus and phacoemulsification surgery. He has broad experience in ocular trauma and retinopathy of prematurity.
