We take pride in the innovations of our ophthalmology service. Our Ridley Clinic was named after Sir Harold Ridley, who pioneered artificial intraocular lens implantation after cataract surgery. St Thomas’ was also the first centre in the UK where laser refractive surgery was carried out.

Our range of diagnostic equipment including:
- visual fields machines to determine your field of vision
- optical coherence tomography (OCT) to view 3D images of both the front and the back of your eye including the retina
- a Fundus camera to perform fluorescein angiography so see the blood vessels in the retina
- ultrasound machines to view the eye
- biometry machines to determine the correct lens power for patients requiring cataract surgery
- specialist ophthalmic lasers to treat different conditions of the eye.

You’ll be in experienced hands across the board. Our wider NHS team supports our consultants and includes highly experienced specialist nurses, orthoptists, optometrists and technicians.
You are assured of best practice and clinical excellence, whoever you’re seeing. Our consultants and their supporting teams are all also part of the NHS team and are subject to the NHS clinical governance standards. Our staff follow approved clinical guidelines and policies to make sure the care we provide is aligned with best practice. We also run regular clinical audits to measure our clinical outcomes.
